Why does female do fast on chaitri punam

    6 months ago 151

In Jain Dharma, there is no special rule that only females should fast on Chaitri Poonam. Fasting (upvaas, ayambil, etc.) is for both men and women equally.

However, in many families and local traditions, it is more commonly seen that ladies regularly keep vrats and fasts on specific tithis, like:

    • Poonam (full moon)
    • Aatham / Chaudas
    • Paushadh days
    • Special tithis of Tirthankars, Paryushan, etc.

Why do some women fast on Chaitri Poonam?

From a Jain point of view, the reasons are:

    1. Day of special punya (merit)

Poonam is generally considered a shubh (auspicious) day. Doing: - Upvaas - Ekasana / Ayambil - Swadhyay (scripture study) - Jaap, Samayik, Pratikraman

on such days is believed to give more punya and helps in purifying karma.

    1. Control over senses (indriya niyam)

Fasting reduces: - attachment to taste - laziness, heaviness - constant thinking of food

This helps in: - developing saiyam (self-control) - increasing dhyan (concentration) - making the mind softer for dharma and compassion.

    1. Start of new cycle / month

Poonam marks an important point in the lunar month. Many people want to: - start the new fortnight with clean mind and body - offer that day to dharma, not only to worldly work.

    1. Family / local tradition

In many houses, elders began a niyam like: - “Every Chaitri Poonam I will do upvaas or ayambil.” Daughters and daughters‑in‑law then continue this tradition, so it looks like “ladies do this fast”, but dharma-wise it is not only for females.

    1. Bhav (inner feeling)

The main reason in Jainism is always bhav (intention): - repentance for sins done - wish to reduce anger, ego, greed, attachment - desire for samyak darshan and a better spiritual path in future births

Fasting with such bhav on any Poonam, including Chaitri Poonam, is considered spiritually uplifting.

    Important points in Jain view

    • Fasting is never compulsory for women only.
    • If health is weak, light niyam (like ekasana, boiled food before sunset, less spicy, etc.) is also good.
    • The real value of the fast is:
    - Ahimsa (no violence, carefulness) - Saiyam (control) - Dharma karya (prayer, swadhyay, pratikraman) - Shuddha bhav (pure intention)

So, many females fast on Chaitri Poonam because of tradition and faith in extra punya on that day, but according to Jain Dharma, anyone (male or female) can and may do that fast, and what really matters is their inner bhav and right conduct.
