What's the point of doing dharm or taking diksha, if we can't attain moksh in this birth itself in 5th ara

    6 months ago 109

Very meaningful doubt. Let’s see it step‑by‑step in simple language.

    1. Fact first: Moksh from Bharat in 5th āra

According to both Digambar and Shvetāmbara:

    • In present 5th āra (pancham kāl) of Bharat kṣetra,
no Tirthankar, no Kevali and no moksh happen.
    • Moksh is, however, presently happening in Mahāvideh kṣetra.

So your understanding is right: from here, in this time‑cycle, we won’t get final liberation in this very birth.

Then why do dharm? Why dīkshā?

    ---

    2. Real purpose of dharm and dīkshā (even in 5th āra)

    a) To change your future birth‑place and future result

    Every single:

    • small vrat,
    • pratikraman,
    • samayik,
    • dān,
    • brahmacharya,
    • dīkshā,
creates saṃvar (stopping new bad karma) and nirjarā (shedding old karma).

    Result:

    • Lighter karma now,
    • Better births later (e.g. human with higher spirituality, dev gati, or Mahāvideh birth),
    • And finally, in the right place/right time, moksh becomes possible.

So dharm is not “wasted” just because moksh is not immediately this birth. It is building the staircase. This step may not be the terrace, but without this step there is no terrace.

    ---

    b) To reduce present suffering and inner disturbance

Even in 5th āra, effects of karma can be softened:

    • Less anger, ego, deceit, greed.
    • More shānti (peace), sahanshilatā (tolerance), dayā (compassion).
    • Better relationships, fewer inner conflicts, clearer decisions.

    Dīkshā or strong dhārmik life:

    • Removes many pain‑giving karmas in a short time by intense tap and restraint.
    • Brings deep inner sukh that material things can’t give.

So dharm is not only for “after death”; it directly improves this very life.

    ---

    c) To purify darshan (vision) – the root of everything

Main bondage/kaṣāy starts from mithyātva (wrong vision of self and world).

    Through:

    • Jinendra‑bhakti,
    • listening to true updesh,
    • reflection on soul (ātma‑chintan),
    our samkit (right faith) strengthens.

Even if full moksh is not now, darshan‑parivartan (shift in inner vision) is possible now. Once right vision appears firmly, the soul is practically “booked” for moksh sooner or later.

This is the true success of a life, even in pancham kāl.

    ---

    d) To avoid falling further down

    Fifth āra is spiritually weak:

    • Violence, deceit, sensuality etc. are common.
    • If we do not do dharm, we easily slip into heavy paap, leading to narak or tiryanch births.

    Dharm practice:

    • Acts as brake on this slide.
    • Protects the soul from going still lower.

So, even “just” holding basic vows and decency in this era is huge spiritual protection.

    ---

    3. Special point about dīkshā

Someone might ask: “If no moksh now, why such a big step like dīkshā?”

    Because:

    1. Fastest nirjarā

Monastic life (sādhu/sādhvī) with full restraints, daily tap, constant awareness gives intense destruction of karma.

    1. Direct line to Mahāvideh / moksh

Strong sādhan now can give: - future Mahāvideh birth with living Tirthankar’s samosaraṇ, - or birth in era/region where moksh is open. Then, from there, soul can actually complete the journey.

    1. Role‑model for others

In 5th āra, having living munis/ārīkās/bhikṣus: - keeps Jin‑shāsan alive, - inspires thousands of householders to do at least some dharm. The punya of preserving dharm in bad times is extremely high.

So dīkshā is not useless; it is high‑intensity preparation for moksh.

    ---

    4. But isn’t it demotivating that moksh is far?

From Jain dr̥ṣṭi, time‑cycle is huge, soul is beginningless and endless.

    Think like this:

    • You are on a very long journey.
    • Today’s stage is such that you can:
    - repair the vehicle, - throw away heavy luggage, - collect perfect map and fuel for future stages.
    • Final destination may be a few stages ahead, but work done today is still essential.

    So:

    • Not doing dharm because moksh is not “this birth”
is like refusing to study because degree is not “this week”.

    ---

    5. What is success in this life, realistically?

In Pancham Kaal, a truly successful Jain life is:

    • Avoiding heavy paap (hiṃsā, dānuṣṭhāna, intense rāg‑dveṣ).
    • Firm faith in:
    - soul (jīva), - karma, - Tirthankar, - moksh.
    • Doing as much as possible:
    - samayik, pratikraman, upvās, svādhyāy, - charity with non‑attachment, - brahmacharya as far as possible, - truthfulness, non‑violence.
    • If possible, going up to:
    - great vrat (shrāvaks), - or full dīkshā (muni/sādhvī).

Such a soul moves clearly toward:

    • Mahāvideh or
    • suitable kṣetra/āra
where moksh is then actually obtained.

    ---

    6. Summary in one line

Even though moksh is not possible from Bharat in this 5th āra, every bit of dharm and dīkshā now directly prepares and pushes the soul toward that definite moksh – by purifying karma, changing future births, giving right vision, and saving us from spiritual fall.
