Who are ekendriya jiv
In Jainism, ekendriya jiv are:
- One‑sensed living beings
- They have only the sense of touch (sparsh‑indriya).
They are also called sthāvar jiv (immobile beings). Jain scriptures describe five main types of ekendriya jiv:
- Prithvi‑kaya – earth‑bodied beings
(living forms in natural earth, clay, stones, metals, etc.)
- Ap‑kaya – water‑bodied beings
(living forms in natural water)
- Tejas‑kaya – fire‑bodied beings
(living forms in natural fire/heat)
- Vayu‑kaya – air‑bodied beings
(living forms in natural air)
- Vanaspati‑kaya – plant‑bodied beings
(all plants, seeds, creepers, trees, etc.)
For ahimsa, Jains are taught to be very careful even with these very minute lives – in soil, water, air, fire, and plants.
