surname/community name, not a guarantee of religion.
- Some Jaiswals are
Jain, some are
Hindu (often Vaishya/Kalwar, sometimes Brahmin or Rajput, etc.).
- To know if a particular family is Jain, you have to see:
- Their
devotional practice (Jain mandir/upāśray, Jain rituals, Paryushan, Samvatsari pratikraman, etc.)
- Their
accepted panth (Digambar / Shvetambar)
- Their
family tradition – what they themselves identify as.
- Religious identity in Jain Dharma
- In Jainism, what ultimately matters is
dharma‑pratipatti (actual practice of Jain principles) – ahiṁsā, sāmāyik, pratikraman, vows, right faith – not just surname or jati.
- So a “Jaiswal Jain” is someone from the Jaiswal community who
follows Jain Dharma in belief and practice.
