    can we eat makhana ?

    6 months ago 209

In Jainism, eating makhana (fox nuts / lotus seeds) is generally allowed, but with some important points:

    1. Type of food (Dravya)

    - Makhana is a plant-based seed, not root or underground stem. - So it does not fall in the same category as potatoes, onions, garlic, etc., which many Jains avoid because they are root vegetables and involve more violence to living beings.

    1. Violence (Himsa) aspect

    - Compared to many other foods, makhana involves relatively less himsa, so most Jains (both Shwetambar and Digambar) consider it permissible. - As always, less processed, clean, and carefully prepared food is better from the viewpoint of ahimsa.

    1. Day-to-day practice

    - Many Jains eat makhana during upvas, ayambil, or as a light snack, roasted in ghee or oil, with rock salt etc., depending on their personal and family rules. - You should still follow your own Guru’s, Sampraday’s, or family’s niyam if they have any special restrictions.

    1. When it may not be allowed

    - On some special vows (vrat) or very strict ayambil / tap, people may limit to very simple grains or specific items only. In that case, makhana may be avoided not because it is wrong, but because the niyam is stricter.

So, in normal Jain practice: → Yes, you can eat makhana, unless you are following a specific personal or religious vow that restricts it.
