can we eat babycorn, broccoli, spring onion?

    6 months ago 157

    Short, practical Jain view:

    1. Baby corn – Allowed (for normal Jain aahar)

    - It grows above the ground, not as a root. - So, like other above‑ground vegetables, it is generally permissible for both Shwetambar and Digambar lay Jains. - Just follow normal care: check for insects/worms, wash well, cook fresh, eat before sunset.

    1. Broccoli – Allowed (for normal Jain aahar)

    - Broccoli is like cauliflower – a flower/vegetable above the ground. - So it is normally allowed in Jain diet. - Same conditions: clean properly, check for small insects, cook and eat fresh.

    1. Spring onion (both bulb and green part) – Not allowed in proper Jain diet

    - Spring onion is the same plant as onion, a root vegetable (allium family). - In Jain Dharma, onion and garlic are avoided because: - They are root vegetables, so uprooting kills the whole plant and many small lives in the soil. - They are traditionally considered harmful for spiritual discipline. - Therefore, both the white bulb and the green leaves of spring onion are treated as not allowed in proper Jain aahar. - Very strict practice: anything that is a part of onion/garlic plant (including leaves) is avoided.

    So, in simple words:

    • Baby corn – Yes
    • Broccoli – Yes
    • Spring onion (any part) – No
