    Why cant eat brinjal

    6 months ago 115

In Jainism, the main reason for not eating brinjal (baingan / eggplant) is ahimsā – avoiding unnecessary violence to living beings.

    Simple explanation:

    1. Brinjal has many seeds (बहुबीज)

    - Each seed is considered a potential life. - Eating a vegetable with so many seeds means harming many living beings at once. - To reduce this himsā, many Jains avoid brinjal completely, or at least on special days (Paryushan, Ashtami, Chaturdashi, etc.).

    1. It easily gets insects and worms

    - Soft brinjal often has tiny worms or insect eggs inside, which we may not see. - Cooking and eating it can kill many small lives, again increasing himsā.

    1. Not exactly the same in every family/sect

    - Some very strict Jains never eat brinjal. - Some eat it, but avoid on certain tithis or during Paryushan. - The base principle is the same: minimise killing of small lives as much as possible.

So, “why can’t we eat brinjal?” Because, as per Jain āchār (conduct), brinjal is considered a high-himsā vegetable due to its many seeds and the likelihood of small creatures living inside it. To follow ahimsā more strictly, many Jains choose to leave it.
