WHY DO WE DO DHOOP IN MANDIR?
In Jainism, performing dhoop (incense offering) in a mandir (temple) is a form of devotional practice known as dhoop deep naivedya puja. The act of offering incense symbolizes the following:
- Purification: The fragrance of incense is believed to purify the atmosphere, creating a serene and spiritual environment suitable for worship and meditation.
- Detachment: The smoke from the incense rises and disappears, symbolizing the impermanence of material things and reminding devotees to cultivate detachment (vairagya) from worldly attachments.
- Offering Reverence: It is an expression of respect and devotion (bhakti) towards the Tirthankaras and Arihants, who have attained spiritual liberation.
- Spreading Virtues: Just as the incense spreads fragrance, devotees are reminded to spread virtues such as non-violence, truth, and compassion in their lives.
In Jain puja rituals, dhoop is one of the eight substances (ashta-dravya) offered during the Ashtaprakari Puja, each with its own symbolic meaning. Offering dhoop helps to focus the mind and enhance spiritual concentration during prayers and meditation.
