SHOULD WE KEEP FUNCTIONS FOR TAPASVI
In Jainism, organizing functions or gatherings to honor tapasvis (those who perform tapasya or intense spiritual austerities) is a traditional practice in many Jain communities. These functions are meant to encourage spiritual discipline, inspire others, and express respect for the self-control and penance performed by tapasvis.
However, Jain scriptures and teachings emphasize humility (vinay), non-attachment (aparigraha), and the avoidance of pride (maan). While it is positive to support and encourage spiritual endeavors, great care should be taken that such functions do not lead to pride, showmanship, or attachment to praise and recognition. The focus should remain on spiritual upliftment, inspiring others towards dharma, and not on social display or extravagance.
Ideally, any felicitation or function for tapasvis should be simple, spiritual, and in line with Jain principles of non-violence (ahimsa), non-possessiveness, and humility. The intent should be to encourage others on the path of self-restraint and to express respect for the tapasvi’s spiritual efforts, without deviating from the core Jain values.
In summary:
- Functions for tapasvis are acceptable within Jain tradition if done with the right intention and simplicity.
- They should not promote pride, attachment, or extravagance.
- The primary focus should be on spiritual inspiration and encouragement of Jain values.
