    Who are the prativasudevas

    6 months ago 100

In Jain Dharma, Prativasudevas (प्रतिवासुदेव / प्रति-नारायण) are:

    • Part of the 63 Shalaka Purush (महापुरुष) – specially powerful souls who appear in every half cycle of time.
    • There are 9 Prativasudevas in each half-cycle.
    • They are the powerful enemies/opponents of the Vasudevas (नारायण).

    Main characteristics of a Prativasudeva

    • They are very strong and influential kings, ruling over large areas.
    • They have great power, wealth, army and pride.
    • They are highly violent, do a lot of himsā (violence) for power and victory.
    • Their life story is always connected with a Vasudeva and a Baladeva:
    - Baladeva – ideal, dharmic hero (follows ahimsa as far as possible). - Vasudeva – heroic conqueror who finally kills the Prativasudeva. - Prativasudeva – the evil or adharmic side of the story, who fights against dharma and is finally destroyed.

Examples from Jain versions of popular stories:

    • In Jain Rāmāyaṇ:
    - Rāvaṇa is a Prativasudeva, - Lakshman is Vasudeva, - Rām is Baladeva.
    • In Jain Mahābhārata:
    - Jarasandha is a Prativasudeva, - Krishna is Vasudeva.

    Spiritual view

    • Prativasudevas do have high punya (merit) from past lives (hence such power),
but because of intense violence, anger, ego, and hatred, they bind very heavy paap (bad karma).
    • Their end is usually sad and violent, leading to narak gati (hell) first.
    • Ultimately, like all souls, they too can attain moksha in very far future births after purifying their karma.
