Give me list of all jain surnames

    6 months ago 496

In Jainism there is no fixed or official list of “Jain surnames.” Jains belong to many regions, languages and trading communities, so surnames are very diverse and often overlap with non‑Jains.

So it is not possible to give a complete list of all Jain surnames, but here are some of the more commonly seen ones, grouped roughly by community/region:

    1. Very common across many Jain communities

    • Jain
    • Shah
    • Soni / Sonī ( jainknowledge.com)
    • Oswal / Osval
    • Saraogi / Sarogi / Sarawagi ( jainknowledge.com)
    • Surana
    • Bafna / Bapna
    • Kothari
    • Suri ( jainknowledge.com)

    2. Rajasthan / Marwari–Oswal / Aggarwal–type Jains

    • Oswal
    • Khandelwal
    • Porwal / Porval
    • Maheshwari (some families are Jain) ( jainknowledge.com)
    • Lodha
    • Choradia / Choradiya
    • Patni
    • Gothi
    • Dugar
    • Jhaveri / Javeri

    3. Gujarat and Western India

    (often Śvetāmbara business families)
    • Shah
    • Mehta
    • Soni / Sonī
    • Gadhiya / Gadiya
    • Sanghvi / Sanghavi
    • Doshi
    • Zaveri / Jhaveri
    • Parekh
    • Vakil
    • Surti (also used as regional surname) ( jainknowledge.com)

    4. Karnataka / South India (mainly Digambar)

    • Setty / Shetty (some families are Jain)
    • Jain (added as a suffix or alone)
    • Hombuja / Humcha (from place)
    • Tumkur / Tumkuri (from place)
    • Names ending in “–appa / –anna / –swamy” sometimes used before “Jain”

    5. North & Central India – mixed communities

    • Jain (simple adopted surname) ( jainknowledge.com)
    • Singhai / Singhee (older trading titles in some Jain families)
    • Kasliwal
    • Mutha
    • Baid / Vaid
    • Mittal (some are Jain, many are Hindu) ( jainknowledge.com)
    • Goyal (again, both Jains and non‑Jains)

    ---

    Important points to understand

    1. Being Jain is not decided by surname.

Many Jains have surnames that Hindus, Sikhs, etc. also use, and some Jains now simply write “Jain” as their surname. ( jainknowledge.com)

    1. Surname depends on family and region, not on śrāvaka / śrāvikā vows.

A person can be a sincere Jain lay follower (śrāvaka) even if their surname is not “typically Jain”.

    1. Conversion or adopting Jain Dharma:

If someone from another religion accepts Jain Dharma, usually they keep their family surname; they may add “Jain” if they wish, but there is no compulsory change of name in śāstra. ( jainknowledge.com)

    1. Digambar vs Śvetāmbara:

    - There is no separate set of surnames by scripture for each; differences are regional and community‑based. - Some surnames are more common in one tradition (for example certain Marwari Oswal families in Śvetāmbara, or some South Indian surnames in Digambar), but they are not doctrinal rules.

    ---

    If you tell me:

    • your region (e.g. Rajasthan, Gujarat, Karnataka, MP, etc.), and
    • whether you are from a known community (Oswal, Porwal, Khandelwal, etc.),

I can list the surnames that are especially common in that specific Jain group.
