What is kriya for varshutap
Kriyā for Varshi Tap (Varshitap) means: how to actually do this tapa step‑by‑step.
In very simple form:
- Take pachchhakkhān (vow)
- Take permission and guidance from a Guru / learned Jain. - Decide: full Varshitap, half, or as per your capacity. - Do saṅkalp: “I will do Varshitap for dharma and ātmā‑shuddhi, without pride.”
- Basic pattern of fast
- Alternate‑day fasting for about 1 year (13 months 13 days in many traditions). - Fasting day: no food; water as per niyam (some take only boiled water in fixed time, some do nirjal). - Eating day: 1 or 2 simple meals (ekāsan or be‑shan) only in day‑time, with full Jain rules.
- Rules on eating days
- Take only sāttvik, simple food prepared with care for ahiṁsā. - No taste‑seeking items (heavy masālā, fried, outside food, etc. as per your niyam). - Fix time, place and quantity; avoid snacking. - Bow and do prārthanā before and after food.
- Rules on fasting days
- Keep upvās with dhyān, jap, pāṭh – not with TV, mobile, gossip. - Many keep no water after sunset; some observe nirjal on special tithis. - Try to stay calm, avoid anger, arguments and heavy physical work.
- Daily spiritual kriyā (both days)
- Navkār Mantra many times with full concentration. - Samayik if possible, at least once daily. - Pratikraman / alochnā – remember and ask forgiveness for faults. - Svādhyāy – read/listen to Jain granths, especially Ṛishabhdev charitra. - Practice maun (silence) for some time each day.
- Conduct and vrat during Varshitap
- Follow 5 anuvrat carefully (ahiṁsā, satya, asteya, brahmacharya, aparigraha). - As far as possible, keep brahmacharya (celibacy). - Avoid parties, unnecessary outings, and rājasic activities. - Be humble; do not show off your tapa.
- Parnā (breaking the final fast)
- Varshitap usually ends on Akshaya Tritiya with special parnā. - Traditionally, parnā is done with sugarcane juice (ikṣurasa), remembering Bhagwān Ṛishabhdev and King Shreyans. - First do pūjā / stavan, then take parnā from a proper śrāvak/śrāvikā or as per Guru’s instruction. - Maintain vinay and kṛtajñatā (gratitude), no excitement for food.
- Digambar / Śvetāmbara small differences
- Śvetāmbara: usually stress on full 13 months 13 days, detailed tithis, and specific bhakti to Ṛishabhdev during whole year. - Digambar: in some places shorter duration or different fasting pattern; stronger stress on brahmacharya and inner tapa. - Essence is same in both: strong self‑control, karma‑nirjarā, and progress towards mokṣa.
