    About chandannala as a sati

    6 months ago 120

Chandanbala (also called Chandana or Vasumati) is remembered in Jain Dharma as one of the great “Satis” (Mahasatis) – an ideal, perfectly chaste and pure-hearted woman.

    Who was Sati Chandanbala?

    • She was the daughter of King Dadhivahan of Champa and Queen Dharini.
    • From childhood she was gentle, compassionate and very dharmic.
    • Due to war and circumstances, she was separated from her parents and finally became a dāsī (bonded maid) in the house of a rich merchant.
    • Even in suffering, insult, chains and shaved head, she never lost her inner purity, faith and forgiveness – this is her satitva.

    Why is she called “Sati”?

In Jain usage, “Sati” means a woman of perfect character –

    • pure in mind, speech and body
    • firm in vows (vrat),
    • full of daya (compassion) and kshamā (forgiveness),
    • never thinking harm of anyone, even those who hurt her.

Chandanbala’s satitva showed in three main ways:

    1. Unbroken purity in suffering

    - She was falsely suspected, insulted, chained, her head was shaved, and she was locked in a small room. - Yet she did not become bitter or revengeful. She remained calm, forgiving and devoted to dharma.

    1. Ahār-dān to Bhagwān Mahavira

    - Bhagwān Mahavira had taken a special vow to accept alms only under very specific conditions. - Chandanbala, in chains, bald-headed, with one leg inside and one leg outside the door, offered simple dry lentils with deep devotion. - When tears came in her eyes, all the conditions of his vow were fulfilled and Mahavira accepted gochari from her. - At that moment, her chains broke, her insult ended, and her inner satitva shone before the whole city.

    1. Life as a Sādhvī

    - Later she took dīkshā from Bhagwān Mahavira and became a Mahāsati / Sādhvī. - She is honoured as the first head of the Jain nuns’ order (sādhvī-pramukhā), guiding thousands of sādhvīs. - She lived a life of tapas (austerity), humility and service to dharma.

    Did Chandanbala attain Kevaljnān?

    • Some Jain narratives and kathā-granths say she ultimately attained Kevaljnān (divine omniscience).
    • Many traditional summaries simply present her as a Mahāsati and chief sādhvī, without clearly mentioning Kevaljnān.
    • In both Digambar and Shwetambar traditions she is respected as an ideal Sati and great ascetic, the stress is on her character and devotion, not on her being a Tirthankara.

    Her place among the Satis

Among the famous Jain Solah Sati (16 Satis), Chandanbala holds a very high place. She is remembered especially for:

    • Satitva (perfect chastity and purity)
    • Kshamā (forgiveness towards those who tortured her)
    • Dān-bhāv (pure intention while giving alms)
    • Sādhvī-jeevan (ideal life of a nun and leader of nuns)
