How much bad effects & karmas are reduced by doing samaiyak

    6 months ago 129

In Jain Dharma, the fruit of Samayik is very great, but it cannot be measured like “this many karmas are destroyed” in numbers. Scriptures explain its effect in quality, not in count.

    1. What happens to karmas during Samayik?

When Samayik is done properly (with dharma‑bhav):

    1. New bad karmas (pāpkarmas) stop coming in

    - For those 48 minutes, you try your best to avoid: - himsā (violence), - krodh (anger), - mān (ego), - māyā (deceit), - lobh (greed), - unnecessary worldly thoughts. - So āsrava (inflow of karma) is greatly reduced and bandh (new bondage) almost stops.

    1. Old karmas start getting weaker and fall off (nirjarā)

    - By: - pratikraman (repentance), - prarthanā (prayer), - kayotsarga (stilling the body), - swādhyāy (scripture study), - The intensity of many past karmas becomes lighter, and some actually get destroyed (especially those connected with passions and wrong attitudes).

    1. Mohaniya (deluding) karmas get special hit

    - Samayik means to stay in samata – equanimity. - Whenever you sit as “I am soul, only knower-seer”, you are directly weakening delusion (mithyātva & kashāya) – the root of all bondage.

    So, we can say:

    > Samayik = strong samvar (stopping new karmas) + gentle nirjarā (shedding old karmas).

    2. How much is reduced – in simple terms

    • It depends 100% on your inner bhāv:
    - If body is sitting but mind is in mobile, business, or fights → very little karmic benefit. - If mind is calm, alert, repentant, with real feeling of “I am soul” → very big karmic benefit.
    • Even one true Samayik can:
    - Completely change the direction of life, - Make heavy karmas light, - Plant strong seeds for future right faith (samyak darshan).

Jain stories even show robbers, by deep, pure repentance and Samayik‑bhav, burning very heavy karmas and attaining Kevaljnān in the same life – this shows the potential of Samayik when done in its purest form, though that is very rare. ( jainknowledge.com)

    3. Shvetāmbara & Digambara view

    • Both traditions:
    - Accept Samayik as a main cause of samvar & nirjarā. - Prescribe it for both sādhus and shravaks.
    • Details like:
    - exact sutras, - posture, - external method may differ slightly, but the karmic principle is the same: reduce passions, stay in equanimity → karmas reduce.

    4. How to maximise reduction of bad effects

If you want your Samayik to truly reduce karmas:

    1. Prepare – calm down before starting, switch off distractions.
    2. Do pratikraman inside Samayik – honestly recall faults and repent.
    3. Maintain samata – do not entertain anger, jealousy, or planning revenge.
    4. Stay as drashtā‑jnātā – “I am soul, only knowing and seeing.”
    5. End with firm resolve – “I will try not to repeat these faults.”

The more sincere your bhav, the more pap is stopped and shed. There is no fixed number, but the inner change you feel (more peace, less anger, more awareness) is itself a sign that karmic load is reducing.
