Rishavdev contribution in jain
In Jainism, Bhagwan Rishabhdev (also called Adinath, Rishabhanatha) is the 1st Tirthankar of the current time-cycle. His contribution is considered unique because he is seen as the one who started both:
- Civilized worldly life (laukik jeevan)
- The path of liberation (moksha-marg)
Here is a simple summary of his main contributions:
---
1. Gave the first organised way of living
Before Rishabhdev, people are described in Jain scriptures as living a very simple, almost “natural/forest” life without clear rules, professions, or social structure.
Rishabhdev:
- Organised society – taught people how to live together with order and discipline. ( jainknowledge.com)
- Introduced the ideas of:
Because of this, he is also called “Yugadidev” – the one who begins a new yug (era).
---
2. Taught arts, skills, and professions
According to Jain tradition, Adinath Bhagwan:
- Taught 72 kalā (arts/skills) to men
- Taught 64 kalā (arts/skills) to women ( jainknowledge.com)
These include:
- Farming (kṛṣi)
- Trade and business (vāṇijya)
- Writing and script (lipi)
- Use of tools and weapons
- Various crafts, music, household arts, etc.
Special role of his daughters:
- Brahmi – taught script / writing
- Sundari – taught numbers / mathematics ( jainknowledge.com)
So, Jain tradition says: Rishabhdev did not give only dharma, he also gave skills for daily life so that people can live in an ordered, cultured and ethical society.

3. Started Shrama & Right Livelihood
He showed humans how to live not by exploiting others, but by right effort and right livelihood:
- Gave importance to śrama (honest effort)
- Encouraged non-violent occupations
- Laid the base for ethical earning for householders ( jainknowledge.com)
This is the beginning of Jain view of “right livelihood” (samyak ājīvikā).
---
4. Established the Jain Sangh
After renouncing his kingdom and doing very long tapas (austerities), Rishabhdev attained Keval Jnana (omniscience) and became a Tirthankar.
As Tirthankar he:
- Established the four-fold Jain Sangh:
- Taught the full path of:
This is the foundation of Jain Dharma as we know it.
---
5. Gave the base of vows and ethics
From his teachings come the core Jain principles:
- Ahimsa – non‑violence
- Satya – truth
- Asteya – non‑stealing
- Brahmacharya – celibacy/chastity
- Aparigraha – non‑possessiveness ( jainknowledge.com)
These later become:
- Mahavratas (great vows) for monks
- Anuvratas (small vows) for householders
So, both for sadhus and gruhasthas, the root discipline begins from Rishabhdev.
---
6. Spiritual contribution
Spiritually, his main contribution is:
- Showing that any soul, by removing passions (kashāyas) and karmas, can become:
- Demonstrating the path from king to Kevali to Siddha – from maximum worldly power to total spiritual freedom.
He attained moksha on Mount Ashtapada, and from then he is worshipped as a Siddha and Tirthankar.

Digambar & Shvetambar – any difference?
Both Digambar and Shvetambar traditions fully agree that:
- Rishabhdev is 1st Tirthankar
- He organised society and gave arts/skills
- He established the Jain Sangh and the path of three jewels (ratnatraya)
Differences are only in some details of life-story, like:
- Exact names/number of wives and children
- Exact duration of his tapas before the first āhār (alms)
- Some minor narrative points ( jainknowledge.com)
But regarding his contribution to Jain Dharma, there is complete agreement.
---
In simple words: Rishabhdev Bhagwan gave humans both – how to live (civilization) and how to be free (dharma).
