Jain’s get married to
In Jainism, there is no strict religious rule that “Jains must marry only Jains,” but traditionally:
- Ideal / Traditional View
- It is highly preferred that a Jain marries another Jain. - Reason: both partners can follow the same vows (vrat), food rules (ahimsa-based diet), festivals, and raise children in Jain dharma easily.
- Same Sect or Different Sect
- Many families prefer marriage within the same sect (Digambar–Digambar or Shwetambar–Shwetambar). - But marriages between Digambar and Shwetambar Jains also happen; dharma is same, only some practices differ.
- Marriage with Non‑Jains
- From a pure Jain-dharma point of view, the main concern is: - Will both support ahimsa, satya, and a Jain lifestyle? - Will children learn and practice Jain dharma? - If a non‑Jain partner is respectful and cooperative towards Jain principles (no meat, no alcohol, support for pooja, fasting, etc.), many families accept it; some conservative families do not.
- Spiritual Principle Behind Marriage
- Jain scriptures focus more on: - Controlling passions (kashaya) - Reducing attachment (raga) - Living a dharmic grihastha jeevan (householder life) - So, the best marriage in Jain view is: - Where both help each other in sadhana (religious practice), - Follow small vrats, charity, samayik, pratikraman as possible.
In simple words:
- Ideal: Jain marries Jain, preferably same sect.
- Allowed socially: Jain marries non‑Jain, if Jain values are protected and respected.
- Spiritually important: Both live with ahimsa and support each other’s Jain path.
