    Explain which Nigodh jive ?

    6 months ago 97

In Jain Dharma, Nigodh (Nigod / Nigoda) jiva means a very special category of living beings.

Who / what are Nigodh jiva?

    1. Lowest form of life

    - Nigodh are considered the lowest state of jiva in the whole universe. - They have only one sense – touch (ekendriya jiva). - Their consciousness is extremely covered by karma.

    1. Many souls in one tiny body

    - Nigodh-jivas exist in clusters. - One physical “body” contains countless souls together (this is called a samyoga-sharir type description in Jain texts).

    1. Almost no spiritual activity

    - They are in deep ignorance and suffering, with almost no capacity for spiritual effort. - They are at the starting point of the soul’s long journey through saṃsār (cycle of birth and death).

    1. Very important idea

    - Jain scriptures say countless souls remain in Nigodh for very long periods. - From there, very few gradually come out and take higher births (plants, animals, humans, devas, etc.). - This shows how rare and precious a human birth is, because from Nigodh to human is a huge spiritual evolution.

    1. Types of Nigodh (as mentioned in tradition)

    - Nitya-Nigodh – souls that always remain in nigodh state. - Itara-Nigodh – souls that may come out from nigodh and sometimes return to that state. - Exact technical details can vary in different Jain texts, but the main idea is the same: Nigodh = most basic, most bound form of jiva.

    1. Digambar and Shvetambar

    - Both traditions accept Nigodh jivas as the lowest life-form in the jiva hierarchy. - Differences, if any, are only in details of description, not in the main concept.

In simple words: Nigodh jiva are the tiniest, most undeveloped, one-sensed living beings, existing in huge clusters, with very covered consciousness. From this lowest level, souls gradually rise towards higher births like ours.
