    vanditu sutra meaning

    6 months ago 152

Vanditu Sutra is a Pratikraman sutra of the Śvetāmbara Jain tradition. It is mainly a prārthanā + pratikraman (prayer and repentance) sutra for householders (shravaks).

In very simple words, its meaning is:

    1. Namaskār and surrender

First, we bow to: - All Siddhas (liberated souls) - The Tirthankars / Dharma-ācāryas - All sādhus and sādhvīs Then we say: “With their support, I want to do pratikraman (confession and repentance) for all faults done in following the shravak-dharma.”

    1. Repentance for faults in Right Faith, Right Knowledge, Right Conduct

We admit: - If I have done any mistake in jñān (right knowledge), darshan (right faith), charitra (conduct), - Whether the fault was very subtle (suhuma) or gross (bāhya), I criticize those faults, disown them and repent for them.

    1. Repentance for possessiveness and harmful activities

We confess: - Mistakes related to two kinds of parigraha (possession): - External (wealth, land, animals, objects, etc.) - Internal (anger, pride, deceit, greed, attachment, etc.) - Any violent or harmful activity that I: - did myself, - made others do, or - approved when others did. For all this I repent and seek forgiveness.

    1. Repentance for faults due to senses and passions

We accept: - Whatever sins have occurred through the senses, - Through the four kashāyas (anger, pride, deceit, greed), - Due to attachment (rāga) and aversion (dvesha), I reject and condemn those faults and repent for them.

    1. Faults in daily movements and activities

We say: - During coming, going, standing, walking, sitting etc., - Under pressure of others or due to bondage / compulsion, If any sinful activity was done, I confess and repent for all of it.

    1. Faults of wrong belief and wrong company

We ask forgiveness for: - Doubts in true Jain faith, - Desires or liking for false beliefs, - Praising or keeping close connection with followers of wrong views, - Any slip from samyaktva (right faith). For all such faults I repent.

    1. Harm to living beings (especially through cooking etc.)

We accept: - While cooking or making others cook (or any similar act where beings are harmed), - Whether for myself, for others, or for both, - If there was intention to kill or actual injury to even the smallest jīvas (1-sensed to 5-sensed), I condemn those faults and repent.

    1. Faults in the 12 vows of a householder

We confess: - Any violation in: - 5 Anuvrat (small vows), - 3 Gunavrat, - 4 Shikshāvrat, committed during the day or night. For all such lapses in observing the shravak-vratas, I do pratikraman.

In essence, Vanditu Sutra is a deep, humble confession: “I bow to the Panch Parmeshti, and I sincerely repent for all faults in my faith, knowledge, conduct, possessions, daily actions, violence (direct or indirect), wrong company, and any breakage of my vows, whether small or great, known or unknown.”
