In Jainism, a jeev's (soul's) place of birth is referred to as "yoni" (योनि). The term "yoni" denotes the specific type of womb or source through which a soul takes birth in its next life, according to its karma. There are four main gatis (destinies or realms of existence) in Jain philosophy—deva (heavenly beings), manusya (humans), tiryanch (animals and plants), and narak (hellish beings)—and each has various yonis or specific birthplaces within those realms.
