I want to do varshitap but i can't do upvas
You can still connect with the bhāva (spirit) of Varshitap even if you cannot do full upvās. Many shrāvaks do a “lighter” or modified form according to their śarīr-śakti (health) and under guidance.
Here are some practical options:
- Do “Varshitap-bhāva” instead of full Varshitap
- Keep the internal tapa strong: - Daily Navkār Mantra - Short samayik (even 12–20 minutes of shānti, pratikraman, or swādhyāy) - Extra care for ahinsā, satya, no gossip/anger etc. - Take a simple niyam for 1 year in remembrance of Bhagwān Ṛṣabhdev, e.g.: - No night-eating for full year, or - No green vegetables / no mithāi on certain days, or - Daily one small tyāg of taste (no fried, no sweets, etc.).
- Alternate-day light tapa instead of full upvās
If health does not allow upvās: - On “fast” days, you can: - Do Ekāsan (one meal) or Beyāsan (two meals) of very simple food, OR - Do Āyambil if possible (one tasteless meal, no milk-curd-ghee-oil-etc., no masālā). - On the “non-fast” days, take normal Jain food but with discipline (no overeating, fixed time, no night eating if possible).
- Clear your limit with a guru
- Before starting, do pachchakkhān (vow) like: “According to my capacity, I will do alternate-day Ekāsan / Āyambil for one year in the bhāva of Varshitap.” - Explain to a sadhu/sādhvī or experienced Jain elder that you cannot do upvās; ask them to set a suitable format for you.
- Important: health and maryādā
- Jain dharma never asks you to damage the body. If: - you are on regular medicines, - have diabetes, weakness, pregnancy, etc., then strict upvās/Varshitap is usually not advised. - In such cases, bhāva-tap (inner discipline, control of anger, pride, deceit, greed, senses) has more importance than physical fasting.
- Suggested simple pattern (example)
Only if your health allows; adjust with guidance: - Day 1: Āyambil (or Ekāsan) + more prārthanā, Navkār jaap, pratikraman. - Day 2: Normal Jain food (no night-eating, keep it simple). - Repeat this alternate pattern for the year as your “Varshitap-bhāva”.
Remember:
- True Varshitap is a very strong vrata and traditionally means real upvās on alternate days.
- If your body cannot do that, it is better to do smaller tapa with full śraddhā than to force big tapa and fall sick or break maryādā.
