What is Samyak gyan
In Jainism, Samyak Gyan (also spelled Samyak Jnana) means "Right Knowledge." It is one of the three essential jewels (Ratnatraya) necessary for liberation (moksha), the other two being Samyak Darshan (Right Faith) and Samyak Charitra (Right Conduct).
Samyak Gyan refers to the correct and true understanding of the nature of reality as explained by Jain teachings. It involves:
- Understanding the true nature of the soul (jiva) and non-soul (ajiva).
- Grasping the principles of karma, rebirth, and the path to liberation.
- Recognizing the seven tattvas (fundamental truths): jiva (soul), ajiva (non-soul), asrava (influx of karmas), bandha (bondage of karmas), samvara (stoppage of karmas), nirjara (shedding of karmas), and moksha (liberation).
- Avoiding misconceptions, doubts, and ignorance about spiritual matters.
Acquiring Samyak Gyan is considered crucial in Jainism because, without it, one cannot progress on the spiritual path. Right Knowledge must be accompanied by Right Faith and Right Conduct to achieve liberation.
