What is right faith and right conduct

    one year ago 472

In Jainism, right faith (Samyak Darshan) and right conduct (Samyak Charitra) are two essential components of the path to liberation (moksha).

Right Faith (Samyak Darshan): Right faith means having a true and unwavering belief in the fundamental truths of Jainism. This includes faith in the teachings of the Tirthankaras, the existence of the soul (jiva), the law of karma, and the reality of liberation. Right faith is characterized by reverence for truth, non-attachment, and the absence of doubts or misconceptions about Jain principles. It is considered the first step on the path to liberation, as it provides the correct perspective and motivation for spiritual progress.

Right Conduct (Samyak Charitra): Right conduct refers to living one's life in accordance with Jain ethical principles and vows (vratas). It involves practicing non-violence (ahimsa), truthfulness (satya), non-stealing (asteya), celibacy (brahmacharya), and non-possessiveness (aparigraha). For laypersons (shravakas), this means following the five minor vows, while for monks and nuns (shramanas), it means following the five great vows to the highest degree. Right conduct also includes controlling one's passions and mind, practicing self-discipline, and engaging in spiritual practices like meditation and penance.

In summary, right faith provides the correct understanding and motivation, while right conduct is the practical application of Jain principles in daily life. Along with right knowledge (Samyak Jnan), they form the "three jewels" (Ratnatraya) of Jainism, which are the path to liberation.
