    Pancavrata and technology

    6 months ago 102

Pañcavrata are timeless, but they guide us even in today’s world of mobiles, internet, social media and AI.

Below is a simple way to understand “Pañcavrata and technology” for everyday life.

    ---

    1. Ahiṁsā-vrata (Non‑violence) and technology

Main idea: Do not hurt any living being by body, speech or mind.

    With technology:

    • Do not use phone / internet to:
    - Troll, insult, threaten, or bully anyone. - Spread hatred against any person, community, religion, or nation.
    • Before forwarding a message, think:
    - “Will this create fear, anger, sadness or violence in others?”
    • Avoid:
    - Watching or sharing violent / cruel videos for “fun”. - Supporting content that encourages killing, cruelty to animals, or self‑harm.
    • Choose:
    - Apps, channels, and games that increase peace, compassion and knowledge, not anger and aggression.

Inner check: “Is my use of technology increasing kindness or increasing harm?”

    ---

    2. Satya-vrata (Truthfulness) and technology

Main idea: Speak and share only truth, in a gentle and beneficial way.

    With technology:

    • Do not:
    - Spread rumours, fake news, screenshots or edited images just to shock or entertain. - Create fake IDs or fake stories about others.
    • Check before you share:
    - Is it true? - Is it useful? - Is it spoken (or typed) with good intention?
    • Be honest online:
    - In reviews, feedback, posts and messages. - In business – no cheating through digital payments, online orders, or e‑documents.

Inner check: “Is what I am typing 100% honest and spoken with good intention?”

    ---

    3. Asetya-vrata (Non‑stealing) and technology

Main idea: Do not take anything that is not given, even subtly.

    With technology:

    • Do not:
    - Download pirated movies, songs, software, books (ebooks, PDFs) without permission. - Share paid content (courses, e‑books) freely when you do not have the right to.
    • No “digital cheating”:
    - Copying homework or exam answers from internet or friends’ files and showing as your own. - Using hacks / cracks in games or apps that break rules.
    • Respect digital property:
    - Pay for apps / tools / subscriptions honestly, within your capacity. - Give credit when you use someone’s idea, photo or design.

Inner check: “Am I using only what I have truly earned or been permitted to use?”

    ---

    4. Brahmacarya-vrata (Celibacy / sexual restraint) and technology

For householders: controlled, pure conduct; for monks: complete celibacy.

    With technology:

    • Avoid:
    - Pornography, sexually explicit content, vulgar chats, flirting outside marriage. - Following accounts / pages that constantly provoke lustful thoughts.
    • Keep discipline:
    - Clear rules for social media, OTT and browsing time, especially at night. - No secret chats or hidden apps that you are ashamed to show family.
    • Protect others:
    - Do not send dirty jokes, pictures or videos. - Do not pressure anyone into sharing personal or intimate photos.

Inner check: “Is my digital use making my mind calmer and purer, or more restless and lustful?”

    ---

    5. Aparigraha-vrata (Non‑possessiveness) and technology

Main idea: Reduce unnecessary possessions and attachment; be content and simple.

    With technology:

    • Limit gadgets:
    - Avoid always chasing latest phone, laptop, watch, etc. if not truly needed.
    • Limit usage:
    - Fix time for social media, games, OTT. - Practice “digital upvās” – some hours or a day with no non‑essential use.
    • Reduce attachment:
    - Do not measure your worth by likes, followers, or comments. - If a phone breaks or is old, accept calmly instead of anger and show‑off desire.
    • Use for dharma:
    - Use technology more for svādhyāy (scripture study), pravachan, bhakti, and useful learning.

Inner check: “Am I using the device, or is the device using me?”

    ---

    For householders: Anuvrata and technology

Shrāvaks and shrāvikās follow Aṇuvrata – the same five vows in a limited way.

In today’s time, following Anuvrata can mean:

    • Ahiṁsā Anuvrata:
Never use technology to emotionally or socially harm anyone.
    • Satya Anuvrata:
Be very careful before forwarding / posting anything; do not join in lies.
    • Asetya Anuvrata:
Stay away from all forms of digital piracy and cheating.
    • Brahmacarya Anuvrata:
Keep your phone and internet life clean; protect your mind and relationships.
    • Aparigraha Anuvrata:
Control time, money and energy spent on gadgets and online life.

You can read a simple explanation of the 12 vows for laypeople (Anuvrata etc.) here:

    Simple daily practice with technology

    1. Before using:

“Today I will use my phone/computer with ahimsa and samyam (self‑control).”

    1. While using:

    - Is this necessary? - Is this helping my spiritual growth, or pulling me down?

    1. Before sleep:

    - 2–3 minutes of pratikraman for digital faults: - I hurt someone by message / post. - I lied / exaggerated online. - I consumed or shared wrong content. - I wasted too much time.

Pañcavrata do not oppose technology; they guide us to use technology in a pure, careful and spiritual way, so that even our mobile and internet life becomes a step towards moksha, not away from it.
