    Can Jain's use AI

    6 months ago 118

In Jainism, there is no direct mention of “AI” in scriptures because it is a modern technology. But we can decide about its use based on Jain principles.

    In simple terms:

    1. Yes, Jains can use AI

    - For lay Jains (śrāvaks/śrāvikās), using technology like AI is allowed, as long as it is used carefully and ethically. - Jainism focuses more on how you use something, rather than the object itself.

    1. Conditions according to Jain principles

    - Ahimsā (non‑violence): - Use AI in ways that reduce harm to living beings. - Avoid using AI for weapons, cheating, exploitation, spreading hate, etc. - Also think about indirect himsā – for example, very heavy energy and water usage, environmental damage, etc. If some use of AI causes a lot of such harm, a Jain should try to reduce or avoid that type of use.

    - Aparigraha (non‑possessiveness): - Do not become addicted to or overly attached to gadgets, apps, or AI tools. - Use them as a helper, not as something you are constantly stuck to or greedy about.

    - Satya (truthfulness): - Do not use AI to spread lies, fake news, or to deceive people. - Use it for knowledge, education, and benefit of others.

    - Right intention (samyak bhāv): - Ask: “Is my purpose compassionate and honest?” - Using AI for study, health, livelihood with minimum himsā, or for spreading Jain knowledge is more in line with dharma than using it only for ego, show‑off, or harming others.

    1. Monks and nuns (sādhus/sādhvīs)

    - Both Digambar and Shvetāmbara monks follow strict rules of non‑attachment. - They normally do not personally use or handle devices and AI tools. - At most, lay followers may use technology around them (like live pravachan streaming), but the renounced ones keep direct distance from such instruments.

    1. Practical Jain approach

    - Total avoidance of all modern tools is very difficult for householders. - So Jainism teaches: minimize himsā, minimize attachment, and use everything with awareness. - If a particular AI use clearly increases violence, cheating, or environmental damage, a sincere Jain should rethink or limit that usage.
