    The story of Manibhadra Veer

    6 months ago 110

Here is a simple version of the traditional Jain story of Shri Manibhadra Veer (Manibhadraveer Dada):

    ---

    1. Previous birth – Shravak Maneksha of Ujjain

In his previous human birth, Manibhadra Veer was born in Ujjain as a Jain shravak named Maneksha (or Manekchand). He was:

    • Very faithful to Jain Dharma
    • Deeply devoted to his Guru and Tirthankars
    • Honest, brave and helpful to sadhu–sadhvijis and shravaks

Because of his strong shraddha (faith) and seva (service) towards Jain Dharma, he collected very powerful punya (merit).

    ---

    2. Rebirth as Dev – Manibhadra Veer Yaksha

After death, due to this great punya and devotion, he was reborn as a powerful Yaksha Dev (deity) known as Shri Manibhadra Veer.

In Jain tradition, he is considered:

    • A Samyaktvavan Dev – one who has right faith in the Jain Tirthankars
    • A protector of Jain Dharma
    • A guardian of sadhus, sadhvis and sincere shravaks

His special duty is to remove obstacles (vighna) that come in the path of true dharma and protect those who worship with nishkām bhakti (selfless devotion, without worldly greed).

    ---

    3. Protection from Bhairavs and evil forces

    According to Jain kathā:

    • In one period, some Bhairavs and other evil forces started troubling Jain sadhus, sadhvis and shravaks.
    • They disturbed swādhyāy, pratikraman, sāmāyik and even tried to break the faith of devotees.

    Seeing this:

    • Manibhadra Veer took a strong vow to protect the Jain Sangh.
    • He confronted these evil forces and subdued them.
    • From that time, he became famous as a Rakshak Dev (protector deity) of Jains.

Because of this, many Jains believe that when there is strong trouble, black magic, fear, or obstacles in dharma, sincere prayer to Manibhadra Veer with faith and purity brings protection.

    ---

    4. Three sacred places – Ujjain, Aglod, Magarwada

A very famous part of his story is connected with three main tirths:

    1. Ujjain (Madhya Pradesh) – by the river Shipra
    2. Aglod (Gujarat)
    3. Magarwada / Magarvada (Gujarat)

It is told that, in a previous incident of battle with evil forces, his divine body was separated into three parts:

    • Pindi (lower part / feet) – Magarwada
    • Dhad (torso / body) – Aglod
    • Mashtak (head) – Ujjain

    So:

    • At Magarwada, devotees worship mainly the Pindi
    • At Aglod, the body (dhad)
    • At Ujjain, the head (mashtak)

    Traditionally it is believed that:

    • If someone does darshan of all three places between sunrise and sunset in one day, with pure heart and without worldly show-off, it is considered a very powerful upāsanā and brings special grace and protection of Shri Manibhadra Veer.

    ---

    5. How Jains worship Manibhadra Veer

Very important from Jain point of view:

    • Manibhadra Veer is not a Tirthankar.
    • He is a Dev (Yaksha) who has deep faith in Tirthankars and serves their śāsan.
    • Jains worship him only as a helper and protector, not as the ultimate goal.

    Usual practices:

    • Offering Shreefal (coconut), sukhdi or simple sweets
    • Recitation of “Shri Manibhadra Veer Stavan / Stotra”
    • Doing aartis, chaityavandan and prayers for:
    - protection from fear, - removal of obstacles, - success in dharma-yukta work (work done within limits of Jain principles).

However, the highest worship in Jain Dharma always remains:

    • Tirthankars
    • Siddha Bhagwan
    • Arihant, Siddha, Acharya, Upadhyay, Sādhu (Panch Parmesthi)

Devs like Manibhadra Veer are respected as sādhans (means), not the sādhya (final goal).

    ---

    6. Digambar–Shvetambar notes

    • Both Digambar and Shvetambar traditions accept the existence of such devs who protect Jain dharma.
    • The special fame and organised upāsanā of Manibhadra Veer is more prominent in Shvetambar (especially Tapa Gacch) circles, but many Digambar Jains also have respect for him as a protector dev.
    • Story details (like exact names, places, small incidents) may vary slightly by gacch / sampradāy, but the core theme is the same:
a dev who is a strong supporter of Jain Dharma and its followers.

    ---

    7. Main spiritual lesson

The story of Manibhadra Veer teaches:

    1. Strong faith and seva to Jain Dharma never goes waste.
    2. Even after rebirth as a Dev, a soul can continue to serve Tirthankar’s śāsan.
    3. True protection comes when:

    - We follow ahimsa, satya, brahmacharya, aparigraha, achaurya, - We do pratikraman, sāmāyik, swādhyāy, and - We keep shraddha on Tirthankars.

Worship of Manibhadra Veer is meaningful only when it supports this path and does not replace it.
