    Types of sharir

    one year ago 492

In Jainism, the concept of "sharir" (body) is important in understanding the soul's (jiva's) existence in the cycle of birth and rebirth (samsara). Jain philosophy describes various types of bodies that the soul acquires due to its karma. These are known as "kinds of bodies" or "sharir bhed".

The main types of sharir (bodies) in Jainism are:

    1. Audārika Sharir (Physical or Gross Body):

This is the physical, tangible body that is visible and experienced during human, animal, and plant existence.

    1. Vaikriya Sharir (Protean or Transformable Body):

This is a subtle body that can change form and size at will. Heavenly beings (Devas) and hellish beings (Narakis) possess this body.

    1. Āhāraka Sharir (Translocation Body):

This is a special kind of subtle body that some highly advanced ascetics can create to travel and seek answers from Kevalis (omniscients).

    1. Tejas Sharir (Fiery or Luminous Body):

This is the body made of fire or energy. It is associated with bodily functions like digestion and heat. Every soul in worldly existence has this body along with another body.

    1. Kārmaṇa Sharir (Karmic Body):

This is the most subtle body consisting of karma particles that are attached to the soul. It accompanies the soul in every birth and is responsible for the soul's bondage in the cycle of birth and rebirth.

    Summary Table:

    | Type of Sharir | Description | Who possesses it? | |-----------------------|---------------------------------------------------------|-----------------------------------| | Audārika Sharir | Gross physical body | Humans, animals, plants | | Vaikriya Sharir | Protean, can change form | Devas (gods), Narakis (hell beings) | | Āhāraka Sharir | Translocation body for spiritual purposes | Advanced ascetics (rare) | | Tejas Sharir | Fiery/luminous, related to bodily heat and energy | All worldly beings | | Kārmaṇa Sharir | Subtle karmic body that binds the soul | All worldly beings |

These various bodies reflect the Jain understanding of the soul’s journey and the effects of karma on its many lives.
