Can we eat avocado fruit
In Jain dharma, avocado is generally allowed for householders, with some care:
Why it is usually permitted
- Avocado is a fruit from a tree. It is plucked without uprooting or killing the whole plant.
- This fits the basic Jain food principle: prefer parts of plants (fruits, seeds, leaves) where the plant continues to live.
How to eat it in a Jain way
- Wash well, cut fresh in daylight.
- Check carefully for insects or black, spoiled parts.
- Eat it simple: plain, or with other Jain‑allowed items (no onion/garlic, no egg, etc.).
- Avoid eating it at night if you follow the no‑food‑after‑sunset rule.
When to be careful / ask your Guru
- During special vows (Paryushan, Ayambil, Upvaas, etc.) your pachchakkhan/maryada might restrict fruits or specific items. In that case, follow your Guru or local sangh.
- If your family or sangh has any special rule about “new” or foreign fruits, follow that first.
