Dagadful / dagad phool (black stone flower, kalpasi) is a kind of lichen, which is closely related in practice to fungus / mushrooms.

• Fungi, mushrooms and similar growths are generally treated as a‑bhakshya (not to be eaten) because

- they often grow in moist, decaying places with many tiny living beings, - they are considered anantkāy (containing countless lives), - taking them involves comparatively more hiṁsā than normal vegetables.

• Dagadful is commonly used in non‑Jain masalas (biryani masala, goda masala, etc.), often alongside non‑Jain items. So there is an extra risk of mixing with non‑Jain ingredients.

Digambar and Śvetāmbara practice: You will not usually find dagadful listed separately in old śāstras, but in both traditions, all types of mushrooms and fungi are avoided by those who follow strict Jain food discipline. Lichens like dagadful are kept in the same “avoid” category.
