Can we have sex and bath before going to temple
In Jain dharma we look at two separate points here: 1) taking bath before going to temple 2) having sex before going to temple
---
1. Bath before going to temple
- As per Jain maryādā, you should always bathe and wear clean clothes before going to the temple.
- The idea is: when we stand in front of Jina idol, our body, clothes and mind should all be as clean and pure as possible.

2. Sex before going to temple
Jain view is based on the vow of brahmacharya (sexual restraint):
- For sādhus & sādhvīs – complete celibacy always.
- For gṛhasth (householders) – limited sexual life within marriage only, and even that with restraint, not for mere pleasure.
About having sex and then going to temple:
- From principle side (dharma-bhāv):
- After sexual activity the mind is usually excited, attached, disturbed – opposite of the peaceful, detached state expected during darshan and pūjā. - Therefore, from dharma point of view, it is not considered good to have sex and then immediately do temple darshan or pūjā.
- From practical maryādā:
- If someone has had sex, at minimum they should: - Wash properly (full bath) - Wear fresh, clean clothes - Allow the mind to calm down before doing any pūjā or entering garbha-gṛha. - Many elders and traditions simply say: > “First finish your pūjā / darshan, then later at night you may have marital relations.” - During special periods like Paryushan, Ayambil oli, big vrats, pratikraman niyams, etc., sex is usually completely avoided.
- Non-marital sex / casual sex:
- Any sex outside marriage is clearly considered pāp (sin) in Jain dharma. - In that state, just taking a bath and going to temple does not make the act right; one should do pratikraman and prāyaścitta and sincerely try to stop such conduct.

Simple practical guideline
- Best:
- Avoid:
So, strictly speaking:
- Bath before temple – strongly recommended and ideal.
- Sex before temple – spiritually discouraged; better to do pūjā first and keep brahmacharya at least around temple / sādhanā times.
