What is a yatra?
In Jainism, a "yatra" refers to a pilgrimage or religious journey to a sacred place, such as a tirtha (holy site). Jains undertake yatras to visit temples, hills, and other sites associated with the lives of Tirthankaras and other revered figures. The purpose of a yatra is to accumulate spiritual merit (punya), seek inspiration, and progress on the path of liberation (moksha). Common Jain yatras include visits to places like Shatrunjaya (Palitana), Sammed Shikharji, Girnar, and Ranakpur. During a yatra, Jains observe vows of non-violence, truthfulness, and simplicity, and engage in prayers, rituals, and meditation.
