Bhagwan Parshvanath was born in the city of Varanasi, which is also traditionally known as Kashi (and later popularly as Banaras).

So, at the time of Parshvanath Bhagwan’s birth, the place is referred to in Jain texts as:

• Vārāṇasī (Varanasi)
• Kāshi (another ancient name of the same city)

Both names point to the same city on the bank of river Ganga, ruled then by King Ashvasena and Queen Vamadevi.
