Who should be breaking the fast of varshitap doer
In Jain tradition, the ideal way is:
- The Varshitap-doer (tāpkārī) should take parnā (break the fast) from a Jain monk or nun, if possible.
- If no sādhujī / sādhvījī is available, then:
Why? Because Varshitap is inspired by Bhagwān Ṛishabhdev, who broke his long fast from Shreyāns Kumār, a pure-hearted donor. The purity and character of the person offering parnā is considered spiritually important, not their social status or relation (parent, spouse, etc.).
Common practice (both Śvetāmbara & Digambar):
- Try your best that a sadhu/sadhvi gives sugarcane juice (ikshu-rasa) or other parnā-dravya.
- Family members may assist (holding vessel, serving, organizing), but they are not primary “givers” if a monk/nun is present.
- If no renunciates are available, the most vinayī (humble), sāttvik and dhārmik person in your reach is chosen.
