Do we worship Hindu dieties as we worship jain tirthankaras

    one year ago 429

In Jainism, worship is primarily directed towards the Tirthankaras, who are enlightened beings that have attained liberation (moksha) and show the path to others. The main objects of reverence in Jain temples and rituals are the idols of the twenty-four Tirthankaras, especially Mahavira (the 24th Tirthankara) and Rishabhanatha (the 1st Tirthankara), along with other Siddhas (liberated souls).

Jain doctrine distinctly separates itself from the worship of Hindu deities. While some local Jain customs, especially in regions where Jain and Hindu communities live closely, may include peripheral acknowledgment of certain Hindu deities (like Saraswati or Lakshmi) for worldly matters, these are not objects of spiritual worship in the same way as Tirthankaras. Such practices are often considered a matter of social custom rather than religious doctrine.

According to core Jain philosophy, worship of Tirthankaras is not for seeking material benefits but for expressing reverence towards their virtues (such as non-violence, truth, and renunciation) and for inspiration to follow their path. Jain Agamas and scriptures discourage the worship of gods or deities with a desire for worldly gains, as it is believed that only self-effort and right conduct lead to liberation.

In summary: Jains do not worship Hindu deities as they worship Tirthankaras. The primary focus of Jain worship is on Tirthankaras and liberated souls, not on gods or deities of other religions.
