    Vanditu sutar with meaning

    6 months ago 156

Here is the Vandittu (Vanditu) Sutra with a simple, traditional meaning.

    ---

    1. Original Sutra (main opening lines – Śvetāmbara Prakrit)

    Devanāgarī: > वंदित्तु सव्व‑सिद्धे, धम्मायरिए अ सव्व‑साहू अ > इच्छामि पडिक्कमिउं, सावग‑धम्माइआरस्स।

    Simple transliteration (Śvetāmbara): > Vandittu savva‑siddhe, dhamma‑ayarie a savva‑sāhū a > icchāmi paḍikkamiuṃ, sāvaga‑dhamma‑iārassa.

    ---

    2. Simple Meaning (arth) of these main lines

    • “Vandittu savva‑siddhe”
Having bowed to all Siddhas (liberated souls),
    • “dhamma‑ayarie a savva‑sāhū a”
and having bowed to the religious leaders (Āchāryas) and all Sādhus (monks/nuns),
    • “icchāmi paḍikkamiuṃ, sāvaga‑dhamma‑iārassa”
I now wish to do pratikraman (confession and repentance) for faults committed in following the layperson’s religion and vows.

Very simple sense: > “After bowing to all Siddhas, Acharyas and all Sadhus, > I wish to confess and repent for any mistakes I have done in my conduct as a Jain layperson.”

    ---

    3. What the full Vandittu Sutra is about (overall meaning)

The full Vandittu Sutra is a long Pratikraman sutra (mainly used in Śvetāmbara tradition). In essence, the devotee:

    1. Bows to the Pañcha‑Parameṣṭhi

    – Arihantas, Siddhas, Acharyas, Upādhyāyas, and all Sādhus. This sets a humble, pure mindset.

    1. Admits and repents for faults related to:

    - Right faith, right knowledge, right conduct, austerity, energy (any wrong done on this path). - External & internal possessions (greed for wealth, property, passions, etc.). - Five vows of a householder (ahiṃsā, satya, asteya, brahmacharya, aparigraha) and the twelve lay‑vows. - Passions (anger, pride, deceit, greed), instincts (food, fear, sex, hoarding), activities of mind, speech and body.

    1. Seeks forgiveness for:

    - Any harm to living beings (knowingly or unknowingly, by self, by making others do, or approving). - Any faults committed during the whole day in walking, speaking, working, dealing with others, etc. - Any doubts or disrespect towards true Dharma or association with wrong beliefs.

    1. Resolves for the future:

Not to repeat such faults again and to walk more carefully on the path of Samyak Darshan, Samyak Jñān and Samyak Chāritra.

    So in very brief:

    > Vandittu Sutra is a big, detailed prayer of bowing and repentance. > You bow to the supreme beings, look honestly at your day and life, > accept your faults, ask forgiveness, and take resolve to improve.

    ---

    4. Digambar vs. Śvetāmbara

    • Śvetāmbara:
    - Vandittu is a main, long Pratikraman sutra (day and night Pratikraman). - Recited by laypeople during Pratikraman and often taught in chaitya‑vandan.
    • Digambar:
    - This exact “Vandittu” text is not used. - They have other vandanā and pratikraman sutras with the same spirit of bowing and repentance, but wording is different.

    ---
