In Jain tradition, the gender of Bhagwan Mallinath (the 19th Tirthankar) is understood differently by the two main sects:

• Shwetambar tradition

- Mallinath is considered female – often called Mallī Devī / Mallī Kumārī. - She is regarded as the only female Tirthankar of this time-cycle in Shwetambar texts. - Many Shwetambar sub‑traditions like Sthanakvasi and Terapanth also accept Mallinath as female.

• Digambar tradition

- Mallinath is considered male. - Digambar texts hold that all 24 Tirthankars are male, so they do not accept a female Tirthankar in this time-cycle.

Both traditions fully agree that:

• Mallinath is the 19th Tirthankar,
• the symbol (lanchhan) is a kalash (water pot),
• and the spiritual status, keval-jnan, and moksha of Mallinath are the same; only the bodily gender is described differently.
