1. Brahmendra’s heavenly idol

- In a previous time-cycle, a Dev named Brahmendra came to know (from Lord Sagar, a future Tirthankar) that in the next avsarpini he would become a Gandhar of Lord Neminath, the 22nd Tirthankar, and would finally attain moksha on Raivatachal (Girnar). - Filled with deep devotion, Brahmendra made a very special idol of Neminath Bhagwan in heaven from a precious black gemstone called Anjan, decorated with many jewels. - He worshipped this idol like a shashvata pratima (eternal idol). 1. Indra’s doubt and Neminath’s instruction

- Later, when Neminath Bhagwan manifested in this avsarpini, Indra (King of Devs) asked about this heavenly idol, thinking it was eternal. - Neminath Bhagwan said, in essence: No idol in heaven is eternal; only siddhas and their siddha-sthan are truly eternal. 1. Installation at Dwarka under Jnan-shila

- With Neminath Bhagwan’s permission, Krishna Maharaj built a grand temple beneath the sacred Jnan-shila rock in Dwarka. - The idol was consecrated with great pomp: - Gandhar Bhagwan performed the main pratishtha using vasakshep (sanctified sandalwood powder) of Neminath. - Devs and humans together did the abhishek with water from the holy Gaj-Pad Kund, whose water is described as curing both physical and karmic “diseases.” ( jainknowledge.com) - Krishna then worshipped this idol with great devotion every day.

1. Prophecy about Girnar

- Krishna asked Neminath, “How long will this idol stay in my temple?” - Neminath Bhagwan replied (summary): - The idol will remain in Dwarka as long as Dwarka exists. - When Dwarka is destroyed by fire, Goddess Ambika will take the idol to a cave in Kanchangiri (Girnar) where Devs will worship it. - About 2000 years after Neminath’s nirvana, a shravak named Ratnasha will, with Ambika’s help, bring this idol out of the cave and install it on Raivatgiri (Girnar). - It will remain on Girnar for 1,03,250 years, till the end of the 5th ara; then, in the 6th ara, Ambika will shift it to Patal Lok, where it will continue to be worshipped. 1. Ratnasha Shravak and the melting idol

- Much later, Girnar already had a clay-like idol of Neminath made from “Velu” by a Jain king named Vimal. - Ratnasha Shravak, originally from Saurashtra but then living in Kashmir (due to famine), had become very wealthy. Wanting to use his wealth in a religious way, he organized a chaari-palit (on-foot) yatra to Girnar and Siddhachal (Palitana) with Acharya Anandsuri and a big sangh. ( jainknowledge.com) - On Girnar, deeply emotional devotees began to pour water from lakhs of kalash on the old Velu idol of Neminath during abhishek. - Because it was made of clay-like material, the idol melted and turned into a lump of wet sand. Everyone was shocked and frightened.

1. Ambika gives the indestructible idol

- Ratnasha, full of grief, took refuge in Neminath and began intense kayotsarg meditation at Girnar itself. - Seeing his sincere repentance and devotion, Goddess Ambika appeared and gave him the same indestructible gemstone idol originally made by Brahmendra in heaven (the one earlier brought to Dwarka). - She told him that this idol cannot be destroyed by iron, stone, fire, water, lightning, storms, or even Indra’s thunderbolt. - Ambika then gave Ratnasha a strict instruction: - Tie the idol with a raw jute thread, - Carry it without looking sideways or backward, - Do not put it down anywhere on the way. - If it is once placed down at any point, it will stay fixed there and will not move further. 1. Why the idol stays at the entrance

- Ratnasha brought the idol up to the entrance of the existing temple and temporarily set it there so he could clear the old spot and remove the melted idol. - When he then tried to lift the new idol to move it inside to the original place, it would not move at all—just as Ambika had warned. - Upset and anxious, Ratnasha again prayed and fasted. Ambika appeared and said: - The idol will now remain where you have put it (at that entrance spot). - Instead, rebuild the temple with its main entrance to the west and install and worship the idol in this fixed position. 1. Ratnasha’s great punya

- Ratnasha performed ashta-prakari puja, sang stutis of Neminath Bhagwan, and did panchanga pranipat (prostration with five limbs). - When his forehead touched the ground, he felt an extraordinary inner bliss, with hairs standing on end. - Ambika, pleased, placed a Parijat flower garland on his neck as a divine sign of acceptance. - Ratnasha donated generously in all seven kshetras of daan, collected immense punya, and is destined (as the story says) to ultimately attain moksha through his devotion to Neminath Bhagwan.
