What is Charmavart jiv ?
In Jainism, Charmavarti Jiv (also written Charmavarti Jeev) is a type of living being in the four-sensed (chaturindriya) category.
- “Jiv” = living soul / living being
- “Chaturindriya” = having four senses
- “Charmavarti / Charma-avaran” = covered with skin
So, Charmavart Jiv are:
- four-sensed beings,
- whose bodies are covered with skin (charma),
- e.g. certain higher forms of insects/creatures classified in Jain texts as chaturindriya with a skin-like outer covering.
They are saṁsāri jiv (worldly souls), still wandering in the cycle of birth and death, not liberated.
