In Jainism, Charmavarti Jiv (also written Charmavarti Jeev) is a type of living being in the four-sensed (chaturindriya) category.

• “Jiv” = living soul / living being
• “Chaturindriya” = having four senses

- touch (sparsh) - taste (rasa) - smell (gandha) - sight (rupa) - (they do not have the sense of hearing)

• “Charmavarti / Charma-avaran” = covered with skin

So, Charmavart Jiv are:

• four-sensed beings,
• whose bodies are covered with skin (charma),
• e.g. certain higher forms of insects/creatures classified in Jain texts as chaturindriya with a skin-like outer covering.

They are saṁsāri jiv (worldly souls), still wandering in the cycle of birth and death, not liberated.
