how to tie dori on Marasaheb’s ghada

    6 months ago 118

Here “Marasaheb’s ghada” most likely means the lower cloth / skirt-style vastra that Sadhviji (Marasaheb) wears, and “dori” is the string used to secure it.

Because this is a matter of maryādā (proper respect) and lajjā (modesty), the exact way you tie it can slightly differ by upāshray / panth. But the basic, respectful method is usually like this:

    ---

    Before you start

    1. Take agyar (permission / internal resolve) with respect in your mind.
    2. Hands and cloth must be clean.
    3. Maintain proper distance and modesty. Do not pull or adjust the cloth in a way that causes discomfort or exposes the body.

    ---

Simple way to tie the dori on the ghada

    1. Position the ghada properly

    - Make sure the ghada (lower cloth) is sitting at the correct height and evenly all around. - The upper edge should be straight and comfortable for Marasaheb.

    1. Find the center of the dori

    - Hold both ends of the dori. - Bring the ends together so you find the middle. - Place this middle point of the dori at the center front of the waistline of the ghada.

    1. Wrap towards the back

    - Take both ends of the dori from the front and gently wrap them around towards the back. - Do not pull too tight suddenly. Keep asking verbally if it is comfortable before tightening fully (if it is appropriate in your tradition).

    1. Cross the dori at the back

    - At the back, cross the two ends of the dori once. - After crossing, gently pull to adjust the tightness so the ghada is secure but not too tight.

    1. Bring the ends forward or to one side

    - After crossing at the back, bring the two ends: - either back to the front, or - to the side (usually left or right, as per local practice). - Most people avoid keeping the knot directly on the spine at the back for comfort.

    1. Tie a simple, neat knot

    - Use a simple double knot (do gānth) so it does not open easily. - Keep the knot small and flat, not bulky. - The extra length of dori should hang modestly inside the cloth, not dragging down in a way that looks untidy.

    1. Final check

    - Make sure: - Ghada is even all around. - Dori is not cutting into the skin. - Knot is firm but comfortable, and not placed in a way that causes pain when sitting.

    ---

    Important maryādā points

    • Always maintain shraddhā and vinay (deep respect and humility) in your mind while helping Marasaheb.
    • Avoid unnecessary touching; only hold where needed to keep the cloth in place.
    • If your upāshray / guru has a specific way, always follow that method first. Local practice comes before a general method.

If you are in doubt, the best is to learn hands‑on once from the senior sādhvijī or an experienced behen in your own saṅgh and then always follow that same style carefully.
