lotus stem is jain

Lotus stem (kamal kakdi / lotus root) is not considered Jain to eat in the usual Jain dietary rules.

• It is an underground part of the plant (rhizome), similar to other root vegetables.
• In Jainism, such underground parts are grouped with kand‑mool / anant‑kāy items, which are avoided because:

- Uprooting them kills the whole plant. - It disturbs many small living beings in the soil. - They are believed to contain innumerable tiny lives in one body.

So, according to traditional Jain practice (both Śvetāmbara and Digambara), lotus stem is generally not permitted.
