In Jainism, the word “samyak” (सम्यक्) means:

• right / true / proper / perfect / correct
• in the sense of being in accordance with truth (tattva) and leading the soul towards liberation.

Most commonly, “samyak” is used in three main combinations:

1. Samyak Darshan (सम्यक् दर्शन) – Right Faith / Right Vision

- Having a correct, pure belief in Tirthankars, soul, karma, heaven–hell, liberation, etc. - No doubt, no wrong belief, no disrespect towards true Dharma.

1. Samyak Jnān (सम्यक् ज्ञान) – Right Knowledge

- Knowing reality correctly, without misunderstanding or confusion. - Based on Jain Agams/Āgamas and teachings of Kevalis (Omniscients).

1. Samyak Chāritra (सम्यक् चारित्र) – Right Conduct

- Living life with vows (vrat), non‑violence, truth, non‑stealing, celibacy, non‑attachment. - Controlling passions (kashāy) and purifying behaviour.

These three together are called “Ratnatraya” – the Three Jewels of the path to liberation.

So, whenever you see “samyak” before any word in Jain texts, understand it as: > “that which is right, pure, and helpful for the soul’s liberation according to Jain Tattva.”
