    Meaning of jain snatra puja

    2 months ago 30

Snatra Puja – simple meaning and purpose

    1. What is Snatra Puja?

Snatra Puja is a special Jain puja in which we remember and celebrate the birth (Janma Kalyanak) of a Tirthankar Bhagwan. In the puja, the idol is bathed (abhishek), decorated and worshipped.

    1. What does the “snatra” (bathing) really mean?

The bathing of the idol represents the time when Indra and other devas bathed the newborn Tirthankar on Meru Parvat. Spiritually, it reminds us to cleanse our own soul from paap (karmas), just as the idol is cleaned with pure water, panchamrut, etc.

    1. Main inner meanings (bhav / arth):

    - To rejoice in the Tirthankar’s birth, which brings true dharma and right path to the world. - To awaken virtues like ahimsa, samyam (self‑control), kshama (forgiveness), vinay (humility) in our own heart. - To wash away pride, anger, greed, and deceit by developing deep devotion and right understanding. - To pray for shanti (peace) for all jivas, not only for ourselves or our family. - To remember that real puja is of gunas (qualities) of the Tirthankar, not of the material things we offer.

    1. When is it done?

    - In many Shvetambar temples, Snatra Puja is done regularly (often daily or monthly). - It is also done on special occasions like new temple events, Pratishtha, beginning of important work, birthdays, New Year, etc.

    1. Shvetambar / Digambar note:

    - Shvetambar tradition: Snatra Puja with abhishek, ashta‑prakari puja, kusumanjali etc. is very common and well‑established. - Digambar tradition: Generally puts more emphasis on bhav‑puja and not on such elaborate dravya‑pujas in the same form, though abhishek and other rituals exist. The name and detailed vidhi of “Snatra Puja” in this style is mainly Shvetambar.

    1. Short summary in one line:

Snatra Puja is a devotional re‑enactment of the Tirthankar’s birth and divine bathing, meant to purify our own inner self, increase devotion, and spread peace to all living beings.
