What are six mahavigayi
In Jain dharm, the word used is Vigai / Mahavigai, not “six Mahavigayi”.
According to Jain scriptures and traditional Jain achar:
- Mahavigai (4) – the big or very harmful vigai
- Laghu Vigai (6) – the smaller vigai, which many people call “chh (6) vigai”
1. Doodh – Milk 2. Dahi – Curd / yogurt 3. Ghee 4. Tel – Oil 5. Gur / Gulo – Jaggery / thick sugar 6. Tala‑bhunā khādya – Fried / very rich tasty items (sometimes listed as “fried items and sweets”)
So:
- Mahavigai = 4 (butter, honey, meat, alcohol)
- Chh Vigai = 6 (milk, curd, ghee, oil, jaggery, fried items)
Total often spoken of as 10 Vigai (6 + 4) in Jain teachings.
