    Jain marrying non vegeterian

    5 months ago 134

In Jain Dharma, the main issue is not “Jain vs non‑Jain” but “ahimsa vs himsa.”

If a Jain marries a non‑vegetarian partner, you should think clearly about these points:

    1. Ahimsa is non‑negotiable for a Jain householder

    - A Jain is expected to be strictly vegetarian: no meat, fish, eggs, and to avoid all forms of intentional killing for food. - Many Jains further avoid root vegetables, alcohol, and other things that increase himsa or passions. - Living daily with cooking, storing, or eating meat in the same kitchen goes directly against the spirit of Jain ahimsa.

    1. Ideal Jain view for marriage

    - Marriage is a social institution; scriptures do not say “you must marry only a Jain.” - But they expect that after marriage, you continue (and grow) in Jain practice: ahimsa, satya, brahmacharya (fidelity), aparigraha, regular prayer, etc. - For this, it is much easier if both partners are at least committed to a pure vegetarian, non‑violent lifestyle. 1. If you are already in love / planning marriage with a non‑vegetarian

Before marriage, have very honest discussions and clear agreements about: - Food at home - Will the home be 100% vegetarian? - Will there be no meat, fish, eggs, or alcohol brought into the house at all? - Children - Will children be raised vegetarian and taught Jain principles (Namokar Mantra, Paryushan/Dashlakshan, compassion to all beings)? - Respect for your practice - Your partner should at least respect and not mock your fasting, pratikraman, temple/upashray visits, and simple living.

If the non‑Jain / non‑vegetarian partner is ready to fully support a vegetarian home and respect Jain dharma, then such a marriage can be managed with care. If they are strongly attached to eating meat and bringing it at home, this will create continuous inner conflict and karma for the Jain partner.

    1. From karma and spiritual angle

    - When you support, fund, cook, or encourage non‑vegetarian food, you share in that himsa‑karma, even if you do not directly kill. - Living daily in such an environment can slowly weaken your own vows, samyaktva, and bhakti. - That is why elders often discourage marrying a non‑vegetarian unless the person is sincerely willing to change their lifestyle.

    1. Differences in Digambar / Shwetambar practice

    - Both traditions are the same in principle: ahimsa and vegetarianism are basic for a Jain grihastha. - Rituals and details may differ, but no Jain tradition approves supporting meat‑eating as acceptable for a practising Jain spouse.

    1. Practical guidance in simple words

    - If possible, choose a life partner who is vegetarian and who either is Jain or truly respects Jain dharma. - If you are already emotionally involved with a non‑vegetarian, make clear, written‑like commitments before marriage about: - 100% vegetarian home - No alcohol, no meat at family functions you host - Children’s religious and dietary upbringing - Take guidance from a sensible Jain elder or guru in your samaj before final decision.
