In Jainism, “Mangal Paath” means auspicious recitation.

• Mangal = auspicious, holy, bringing true welfare
• Paath = reading/recitation of sacred lines

What is Mangal Paath? It is a short set of Jain prayers recited:

• at the beginning of any religious program, paathshala, pravachan, yatra, puja, etc.
• sometimes also at the end, to conclude with blessings.

Its purpose is to:

1. Create a pure and peaceful atmosphere.
2. Remember and bow to Arihant, Siddha, Acharya, Upadhyay, Sadhu.
3. Pray for shanti (peace), mangal (auspiciousness), and kalyan (spiritual welfare) for all living beings.
4. Set our mind in the right direction before starting any work.

Often, the Navkar Mantra and other short auspicious lines are included in Mangal Paath, because Navkar itself is called “parama mangalam” – the most auspicious prayer.

In simple words: Mangal Paath is a Jain way of saying: “Let everything start and end with true auspiciousness – remembrance of the enlightened ones, purity of mind, and welfare of all souls.”
