What is kriya to do in varshitap
I’ll explain the basic kriyā / daily vidhi for Varshitap in very simple points. (Details can vary a little by guru, sampradāy, and local maryādā, so always follow your own guru’s instructions.)
---
1. Before starting Varshitap
- Take proper pachchakkhān (vow)
- In front of a Jain monk / nun or, if not possible, in front of Bhagwān in the temple or at home. - Decide: - Start date - End date (usually Akshay Tritiya) - Pattern of fast (mostly: one day full upvās, next day bhojan).
- Basic niyam (rules) you accept
- No violence (ahimsā) in thoughts, words, actions. - Satya, brahmacharya (no sexual activity during tap), aparigraha (simplicity). - No eating or drinking after sunset (even on bhojan days, follow chauvihār / tivihār as per maryādā). - Avoid parties, gossip, TV / mobile timepass, etc.

2. Fasting pattern (main outer kriyā)
Very commonly followed Śvetāmbara pattern (your guru may fix exact rule):
- Upvās day (full fast day)
- No food. - Only boiled water (as per time rule given in pachchakkhān – e.g. from sunrise to sunset). - Many also keep bhoyan‑tyāg or ras‑tyāg (no taste, or minimum contact).
- Bhojan day (eating day)
- Either ekāsan (one sitting, one place) or beāsan / beṣaṇā (two sittings) – as decided in pachchakkhān. - Simple sāttvik Jain food: - No root vegetables, no green leafy, no honey, no eggs, etc. - Avoid taste–increasing items (many keep “ayambil‑type” simplicity). - Eat only in day‑time, before sunset, in one fixed place, with full awareness and bhakti.
- Special tithi adjustments
- On some chaudas / pancham / ashtami etc., maryādā may require two fasts together or some change in sequence. - Always follow what your guru or local śāstrī says for that year.

3. Daily inner kriyā (very important)
Whether it is fast day or bhojan day:
- Pratah‑kāl (morning)
- Snān, clean clothes (preferably white, simple). - Go to derāsar if possible; do: - Darshan, vandan, pradakshinā. - Navkār Mantra, Logassa, Uvasaggaharam, Bhaktāmara or other stavan. - Take sāmāyik pachchakkhān (at least once daily).
- Divas bhar (through the day)
- Try to stay in maun (silence) as much as possible, especially on upvās days. - Do: - Navkār mantra jāp - Swādhyāy – read / listen to Jain scriptures, life of Tirthankars, tapa‑kathā of Ṛṣabhdev Bhagwān, etc. - Kāyotsarg – body‑still meditation remembering the pure soul. - Avoid: - Anger, gossip, lies, business tensions, unnecessary travel.
- Sandhyā / Rātri (evening)
- Pratikraman (minimum: Dev‑Guru‑Dharma vandan, alochan of daily faults, kshamā‑yāchanā). - Again do Navkar, stavans and reflect: - “I am doing this tap for kashāy–shānti, nirjarā, and moksha‑mārg, not for show or pride.”

4. Conduct / lifestyle during Varshitap
- Live as close as possible to Poshadh / Sādhujivan:
- Be humble:
- Avoid harming health:

5. Parna (ending kriyā) on Akshaya Tritiya
- Last upvās ends on Akshay Tritiya morning (Vaishakh Shukla Tritiya).
- Parnā vidhi:
- Snān, clean white clothes. - Derāsar darshan, special pūjā / snatra / Rishabhdev bhakti (as per maryādā). - In presence of at least one sadhu/sadhvī or vidyā‑sampann śrāvaka (if available), do: - Kshamā‑yāchanā for any mistakes in tapas. - Break fast traditionally with ikshu‑ras (sugarcane juice) or simple sweet liquid, in remembrance of King Shreyans feeding Bhagwān Ṛṣabhdev.
- After parnā, many do:
- Dān (charity), bhojan for sādhus / sādhvīs / shravaks. - Special swādhyāy and bhakti.

Short summary
In Varshitap, the main kriyā is:
- Outer: Alternate day upvās and simple bhojan, with strict Jain food rules, time rules and pachchakkhān.
- Inner: Daily Navkar, samayik, pratikraman, svadhyāy, maun, and control of kashāy.
- Goal: Not just hunger‑control, but karma‑nirjarā and progress towards samyak darshan – samyak jnān – samyak charitra.
If you share whether you are following Śvetāmbara or Digambar tradition, your local guru will give exact small rules (water timings, food items, special tithis).
