What is concept of anekantvad and shiyavad?

    5 months ago 111

In Jainism, Anekāntvād and Syādvād (you wrote “shiyavad”) are closely connected ideas about truth and reality.

I’ll explain both in very simple words:

    ---

    1. Anekāntvād – दर्शन का अनेक‑पक्षीय सिद्धांत

    Meaning:
    • “Anekānta” = many-sided
    • “Vāda” = doctrine / teaching

So Anekāntvād means: > Reality and truth have many aspects; no single viewpoint gives the whole truth.

    Key points

    • Every thing (dravya), quality, event has many angles – time, place, condition, relation, use, etc.
    • When we see only one angle and insist “only I am right”, that is ekānta (one‑sided view), which Jainism rejects.
    • Anekāntvād teaches:
    - humility in knowledge – “I know something, not everything” - tolerance – others may also hold a partial truth - careful thinking – before judging, see context (desh, kāl, bhāv, dravya).

    Simple example

    Blind men and the elephant:
    • One touches the leg: “Elephant is like a pillar.”
    • One touches the ear: “Elephant is like a fan.”
    • One touches the tail: “Elephant is like a rope.”
Each statement is partly true but not complete. Anekāntvād says: accept the truth in each and also see the bigger, complete picture.

Both Digambar and Shvetāmbara accept Anekāntvād as a core Jain principle; differences are only in some philosophical detail, not in the basic meaning. ( jainknowledge.com)

    2. Syādvād (Shiyavād) – “किसी दृष्टि से” कहने की पद्धति

    Meaning of word:
    • “Syāt” = “in some respect”, “from a certain viewpoint”, “किसी प्रकार से / किसी दृष्टि से”
    • “Vāda” = doctrine / method

So Syādvād is the method of speaking in a way that fits Anekāntvād. It says: > Any statement is true under some conditions / from some viewpoint, not absolutely in every way.

Therefore, Jains often add “syāt” in thought:

    • “Syāt – from this angle it is so; from another angle it may not be so.”

Saptabhaṅgī – 7-fold way of saying

Syādvād uses 7 possible modes for any statement (you don’t need Sanskrit, but I’ll show once):
    1. Syād‑asti – in some way it exists.
    2. Syād‑nāsti – in some way it does not exist.
    3. Syād‑asti‑nāsti – in some ways it exists and does not exist.
    4. Syād‑asti‑avaktavyaḥ – in some way it exists and is indescribable.
    5. Syād‑nāsti‑avaktavyaḥ – in some way it does not exist and is indescribable.
    6. Syād‑asti‑nāsti‑avaktavyaḥ – in some way it exists, does not exist, and is indescribable.
    7. Syād‑avaktavyaḥ – in some way it is indescribable.

This looks technical, but the spirit is simple: “Don’t talk in hard, absolute terms. Always remember condition, place, time, angle.” ( jainknowledge.com)

    Relation between Anekāntvād and Syādvād

    • Anekāntvād = truth is many‑sided (philosophical principle).
    • Syādvād = speak and think according to that many‑sidedness (practical method of expression).

    In short:

    • Anekāntvād says: “Reality is multi‑faceted.”
    • Syādvād says: “So, when you speak about reality, always say it conditionally – ‘from this viewpoint’.”

    Both doctrines help:

    • reduce intellectual himsā (violence of harsh, dogmatic views),
    • increase vinay, sahanshilatā, and samvāda (humility, tolerance, and healthy dialogue). ( jainknowledge.com)
