on which day one can visit temple in Jainism post someone's death

    5 months ago 152

In Jainism there is no strict scriptural (Āgamic) rule that says “you cannot go to temple for X days after someone’s death.”

What we usually follow is social/customary practice, which can differ by sect (Digambar / Śvetāmbara) and by region.

Common practical rule followed by many Jains:

    • After a death in the immediate family, people generally keep a shok / mourning period of about 8–10 days.
    • During this time, they:
    - Avoid going to the temple - Focus on samayik, prarthanā, sūtra pāṭh, and punya for the departed soul from home
    • After the main kriyā and death rites are completed (often around the 10th–12th day, depending on local tradition), people usually:
    - Take shuddhi snān (purificatory bath) - Clean the house - Then resume normal mandir darshan and pūjā

    So, in simple words:

    > In most Jain families, you may start visiting the temple again after the main death rituals are over, usually around the 8th–12th day. > Exact day (8th, 10th, 11th, 12th, or 13th) depends on your community’s and family’s paramparā.

If the person who passed away is a distant relative or acquaintance, many Jains do not observe such a strict restriction and may continue going to the temple as usual.
