In Jainism, Dev Āyushya means the fixed lifespan of a soul when it is born as a Deva (celestial being) in Devlok. It is one part of Āyushya Karma (age‑determining karma).
1. Four types of Āyushya Karma
Āyushya karma decides in which gati (state of existence) and for how long the soul will live:
- Deva Āyushya – life as a celestial being (in Devlok)
- Manuṣya Āyushya – life as a human
- Tiryañcha Āyushya – life as animal/plant/micro-organism
- Naraka Āyushya – life in hell (Narak)
When Deva Āyushya is bound, the next birth (or some future birth) will definitely be in Devlok.

2. Main points about Dev Āyushya
Once Dev Āyushya karma is decided at the time of bondage,
the exact lifespan in Devlok cannot increase or decrease.
No one can die earlier or live longer than that fixed span.
Lifespan of Devas is
much, much longer than humans.
In lower heavens it is counted in thousands of “heavenly years”,
and in higher heavens it goes into
Palyopam and
Sāgaropam units
(unimaginably huge time periods, far beyond trillions of human years).
Dev Āyushya is generally bound by:
- doing punya with attachment to heavenly happiness
- desire for pleasure, respect, luxury, etc. in Devlok
So one goes to Devlok due to meritorious karma mixed with desire.
- Not a guarantee of moksha
Even though life in Devlok is full of pleasure,
Devlok is not the place of liberation (moksha).
After Dev Āyushya is over, the soul can fall to:
- human,
- animal,
- or even hellish birth,
depending on other karmas.

3. Spiritual viewpoint
- Jain Acharyas say: do not desire Devlok.
It is still
saṃsār (cycle of birth and death).
- The best is to use this human life for:
- right faith (samyak darshan),
- right knowledge (samyak jñān),
- right conduct (samyak chāritra),
and aim directly towards
moksha, not just Dev Āyushya.
