How to wear lower garment with Shvetambar Sadhu
Shvetāmbār sādhu’s lower garment is very simple and is always worn in a modest, disciplined way. I’ll explain in easy steps, in general terms. Exact details can vary a little by gacch/saṅgh, so final rule is: follow your own Āchārya’s maryādā.
1. Name and basic points
- Lower garment is usually called cholapattak (loin‑cloth type).
- Colour: plain white only.
- Cloth: simple, clean, un‑embroidered, not transparent.
- Stitching: often unstitched or minimally stitched (as per tradition).
- Length: reaches to below the knees / mid‑shin so that the body is properly covered.
2. How it is worn (general method)
- Prepare the cloth
- Take a rectangular white cloth. - Check it is clean, dry, without smell or stains.
- Wrap around the waist
- Hold one end at the left side of the waist. - Wrap the cloth once (or slightly more) around the waist so it fits snug, but not tight. - The upper edge stays at the waist / navel area, the lower edge falls below knees.
- Make pleats in front
- In the front, make a few straight, neat pleats so that there is no opening while walking or sitting. - The pleats should fall straight down; the cloth should not cling to the body.
- Tuck and secure
- Tuck the pleated part firmly into the waist. - There should be no loose ends hanging. - While tucking, ensure: - when walking, legs are covered well, - when sitting in padmāsan / sukhasan, nothing opens or exposes.
- Check length and modesty
- Walk a few steps and sit down once: - cloth must not ride up above the knees, - no part of thighs should be visible, - from all sides (front, side, back) coverage must remain.
3. Spirit / rules behind the way of wearing
- Aim is lajja (modesty) and saiyam (discipline), not fashion.
- Cloth should be:
- While adjusting the cloth, sādhu takes care not to harm small living beings on the floor (this is why they move slowly and carefully).
4. If you are a shrāvaka asking for yourself
If you are asking how to wear when you are with a Shvetāmbār sādhu, then for shrāvaks:
- Wear clean, simple, modest white clothes, lower garment at least below knees.
- Avoid:
- For exact way (dhoti style or pant‑style), follow your local upāśray/mandir maryādā.

Because styles differ a little between Mūrtipūjak, Sthānakvāsi, Terāpanth etc., if you want the exact step‑by‑step tying method used in your saṅgh, you should learn it directly from your guru or sādhus of your gacch, and then follow that only.
