Do jain people watch hinshak movie like dhurandha. Even though they beleive in ahinsha

    5 months ago 98

Short answer: According to Jain dharma, watching hinsak (violent, abusive, vulgar) movies is not in line with true ahimsa, even if many Jains still do it in practice.

    Let’s keep it very simple:

    1. Ahimsa is not only about actions

In Jainism, himsa / ahimsa is in:
    • Mind (bhav) – thoughts, feelings, enjoyment of violence
    • Speech (vachan) – abusive words, encouraging violence
    • Body (kaya) – actual physical harm

If someone watches a violent movie and enjoys killing, torture, revenge, hatred etc., then mental himsa (bhav-himsa) is happening.

    2. What is the problem with violent movies?

    Such movies usually have:
    • Killing, bloodshed, cruelty
    • Strong anger, revenge, hatred
    • Abusive language, lust, greed, ego

When you watch and enjoy this:

    • These bhavs create paap karma
    • Mind becomes less sensitive to others’ pain
    • Ahimsa-bhav (compassion, daya) becomes weaker

So, even if you are “not doing” violence, you are supporting and enjoying it in your mind.

    3. Why do many Jains still watch them?

    Because:
    • We are shrāvaks (householders), not sadhus
    • We are still full of raaga–dvesha, curiosity, social pressure
    • Many people don’t deeply think how subtle Jain ahimsa is

So, yes, many Jains do watch such movies, but:

    • That does not mean it is correct according to Jain principles
    • It only shows our weakness in following ahimsa fully

    4. What is the ideal Jain approach?

According to Jain values, a sincere Jain should:
    • Avoid movies/series full of violence, vulgarity, abuse
    • Choose content that is:
    - Peaceful - Inspiring - In line with samyak darshan, samyak charitra as much as possible
    • At minimum, if forced in a social situation:
    - No enjoyment of himsa - Maintain awareness: “This is wrong bhav; I should not like this.” - Later do pratikraman for any wrong inner feelings

    5. Practical, gentle guideline

If you honestly ask: > “Is this strengthening ahimsa in my heart or weakening it?”

and the answer is that it weakens ahimsa, then a Jain should slowly reduce and avoid that kind of movie.
